Smooth by Santana featuring Rob Thomas
So I just read somewhere (I can't say where, it's a state secret) that 7 years ago today the #1 song on the billboard charts was "Smooth" by Santana featuring Rob Thomas. That was 1999 friends. Almost 2000... well before I get off on a tangent about time and how messed up it is. Let me deal with this Santana Smooth business.
I hated that song. I hated it a lot - I remember it was everywhere like a plague. Couldn't escape it. I'm much more disconnected from that kind of crap nowadays which is great. I really miss out on most of that kind of crap now and that's wonderful.
Just hearing about that song made me feel a little sick in my stomach thinking back to all of the times I heard it in 1999 and 2000. But as sickly as I feel thinking about it (and having the song sort of reverberate in my mind right now because I'm thinking about it) I also feel really good that I don't think I've heard that song in a long time. It might be 5 years or more since I've heard that song. And that's a wonderful thing. That's the sort of thing I risk when I workout at the gym. I haven't been doing the whole gym thing recently but I've been meaning to get back to it. But one of the worst things about the gym is the music they play. Now I usually would bring headphones to listen to something good or to listen to the TV while on the treadmill or whatever. But sometimes I wouldn't bring the with me and I'd end up having to hear the music they play. While I don't think I ever heard "Smooth" while I was at the gym it's still the perfect example of the kind of absolute crap they do play at a gym.
I stopped going to the gym regularly around July ... but leading up to that time I was going a lot and I remember there was one song I just kept hearing over and over again. It somehow sounded like an even worse version of Creed. Now I *HATE* Creed so for something to be even worse than them is quite a statement. I mean this was just a vomit inducing song of pure cheese. I later found out that this song was by a band called Nickelback. Which was sort of funny because I had heard a lot about how Nickelback sucks but had managed to avoid hearing their music, or atleast I thought I had. But all this time I was hearing this awful song... So one day at the gym I hear the song again... like I did seemingly every time I went there and forgot my headphones. The gym music system never announces who the songs were by so I had no idea... I decided I had to find out who made this song so I could try and do something about it. Maybe have my lawyer send them a cease & desist letter. I remembered a few of the lyrics and typed them into Google to figure it out and there I go... lyrics to the song by Nickelback. I luckily can't remember the lyrics or the name of the song right now or even how it goes. This is a blessing. This is the spirit of the universe protecting me from suffering.
In fact I must say that this song is much worse than Santana's Smooth. Luckily I didnt hear it near as many times though.
