Pretentious

I've long been annoyed by the use of the word "pretentious" in America.

It seems to me this word is completely misused from it's real definition and is instead used as a derogatory statement on anything that is not a part of the lowest common denominator "pop culture" that makes up America. I think the thing that really bothers me about is that it seems like to these people that use this term in this way, thinking itself is a crime. Thinking itself is a negative trait. It is much better to these to be another cog in the stupid machine than to actually think about anything.

This term is often used to describe any sort of "weird" or "intellectual" music. You know that weird stuff that doesn't exist merely for a catchy melody or a good beat. It's as if these imbeciles think that anyone who is actually interested in thinking is doing it just to prove a point or something rather than the fact that they just enjoy stuff on a different level.

People that don't like crap like American Idol aren't being pretentious, they just have taste. They just crave something with a bit more depth to it. This sort of hatred of intelligence belongs in middle school.

People that don't like dumb hollywood movies aren't being pretentious, they just have taste.

I'm just completely sick of the glorification of dumb crap in this country.
