The Dangers Of Marijuana - Legalize It Rant #2
I got this list off of some bullshitting fearmonger site that says "Marijuana is far more dangerous than most users realize."
1. Impaired Perception
WTF? This is a danger? The change in perception is the main reason for smoking marijuana. You may call it "impaired" and I suppose in some ways it is. It depends greatly on what you are doing. For example it's probably not a great idea to smoke marijuana before you operate on some motherfucker in the ER. But it's a great idea to smoke some marijuana before you throw on that groovy Kraftwerk LP that's sitting on the bookstand.
***Break While I Throw On The LP. Although I Suppose To You This Is All Flat. Not Really Linear. I Think Your Perceptions Are Impaired.***
2. Diminished Short-Term Memory
Yeah, OK I'll give 'em this one. But so what?
3. Loss Of Concentration & Coordination
Maybe while you are on it. How is that different than alcohol? In fact alcohol is far worse i this regard. I sometimes find I can have incredible concentration when I get high.
4. Increased Risk Of Accidents
Again, only while on it and nothing compared to alcohol. Why do I compare to alcohol? Because alcohol is not only legal, it's encouraged. In almost every way alcohol is more destructive and dangerous than marijuana. So why is one legal and the other illegal? Laws need to make sense for them to be just.
5. Impaired Judgement
Again. See #3 and #4. Judgement is impaired far more when drinking alcohol.
6. Diminished Inhibitions
Come on. Are these really the best "dangers" they can come up for this horrible devil weed? So far they've given one reason which is actually WHY you take it in the first place. One reason that can only bring the response: "So fucking what?" And four reasons that are all much much much stronger with the legal alcohol.
7. Hallucinations
Danger? I would love to see some fucking hallucinations. I don't think that's ever really happened for me with marijuana. I usually have to man up and get some real shit for that. But again, danger? This is like saying having a good time is a danger of drinking alcohol. Get real. I want a change of perceptions and I want hallucinations. I find these to be interesting experiences. I like to see things in different ways. You can't list the reasons why someone does something as a "danger."
8. Increased Risk Of Cancer
First of all I don't think this has ever been proven. Secondly, are you fucking kidding me? Cigarettes kill how many people a year? (about 440,000... just in America... yeah.) Again, ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME? Fuck off. What the fuck is wrong with people. Goddamn it. Why the fuck is marijuana illegal? It's not even close to as dangerous as alcohol or cigarettes. As Bill Hicks said (paraphrasing here) "I'm still waiting for someone to give me a good reason to why marijuana is illegal. I mean a real reason, not that gateway drug bullshit." Which leads me to...
9. It's A Gateway Drug
There has never been a more meaningless thing said about anything ever. This doesn't mean anything. At all. You can say the same thing about anything else. You can say that cigarettes are a gateway drug. You can say that alcohol is a gateway drug. What does this mean? Nothing. Smoking marijuana doesn't mean I'm going to want to do heroin.
10. Psychoogical Dependency.
WEAK. You can have a "psychological dependency" on anything. You can have one on fucking chocolate. So the fuck what. Guess what the legal drugs nicotine & alcohol have? Real PHYSICAL dependency. Something that can't be said for marijuana. Every single reason they give (except for short term memory) is either the intended result of using the drug or is much much worse with either alcohol or cigarettes (and in some cases both.)
---
LEGALIZE IT. Marijuana should be legalized. It is less dangerous than legal drugs like alcohol and cigarettes.
Furthermore even if it were so dangerous as claimed - So what? We should have the right to put whatever we want into our own bodies. We should have the right to grow what we want on our own land. Civil liberties and personal freedom should only end where another's begins.
Instead of wasting all of this money on the "Drug War" and putting innocent people in jail (and yes people who grow and smoke marijuana are INNOCENT) - the Government could put that money into EDUCATION, and going after real criminals. People who actually harm other people.
I do think that more serious drugs like heroin need to be treated a little differently but their users should still not be treated like criminals. Why should someone be treated like a criminal just for putting something in their own body? it's absolutely insane when you really think about it.
Future generations will look back at our drug laws in absolute amazement. Sort of like how we have a hard time imagining alcohol being illegal.
Which brings me to another point. As far as drugs go - The only thing that creates crime are the laws against it's use. Drugs don't cause crime. It's the laws against them which creates a criminal underworld. It happened with alcohol in the 20s and it's happened since then with other drugs including marijuana.
